It
is easy to see why the hidden mountain stronghold of the Annapurna
Sanctuary is one of the most popular trekking destinations
in Nepal. After some time looking around Kathmandu, we have
an early morning coach ride to Pokhara. The road follows the
Trisuli river for most of the way, with an opportunity to
see the diverse culture of Nepal as we pass along the valley.
On arrival at Pokhara, we transfer to our hotel, which is
in the quite Lakeside district. In the morning we will be
transported to the start of the Annapurna base camp trek.
Our trekking days are not long, this is to allow us to acclimatise
slowly. From the terraced farmland above Pokhara, we trek
on good trails through scattered villages and thick forests,
climbing up slowly to the Annapurna base camp. Here we are
surrounded by a ring of impressive mountains, including Annapurna
1 (8091m) and Machhapuchhare the famous Fish Tail Peak. This
high and glaciated wilderness is quite simply, awe-inspiring.
